At Tywardreath School, we recognise the importance of PE and the role it has to play in promoting long term, healthy lifestyles. It is our vision for every pupil to succeed and achieve their potential as well as to lead physically active lives. We strive to inspire our pupils through fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. The children will demonstrate perseverance and resilience as they will spend time mastering and applying physical skills into game situations and performances.
Our PE curriculum is designed to inspire and develop high aspirations in all of our children so that they have the confidence and abilities to be the best they can be.
We use the Real PE framework as our primary resource. In Key Stage 1 this is designed to develop Fundamental Movement Skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and cooperative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
Swimming is taught weekly to all children in Tywardreath. A qualified swimming teacher is employed to teach the youngest pupils so they get the best start. The school uses the STA scheme of work to support the teaching of swimming and all teachers who teach swimming undertake annual pool safety training.
Prior knowledge is activated at the beginning of each PE topic and at the start of each lesson so that pupils can build upon what they know. By sharing and discussing the sequence of learning with the children and the end point of the topic we are able to be incorporate the pupil's interests and so enhance their engagement.
This may focus on general skills, sport specific skills and well-being related knowledge and understanding. Children are made aware of how the skills taught can be applied to a range of sports.Impact
The impact of our P.E. curriculum is that we create not just well rounded athletes but well-rounded individuals with a healthy body and a healthy mind. At Tywardreath school the children are able to explain why they exercise, how important it is to their health and well-being and how to plan and improve their own exercise.
